Franz Schubert: Winter Journeys D 911
Readings of texts and diary entries about the legendary Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition in the years 1872 to 1874

When, on June 13, 1872, a group of 24 men led by Carl Weyprecht and Julius Payer ventured on a daring project – the discovery of new lands in the north – they certainly did not reckon with what lay ahead of them: the amount of time and the mental and physical exertions involved. The expedition team spent two winters aboard the “Admiral Tegethoff”, their ice-locked ship, before they returned across the ice on sleds and in boats.
For this evening, Benjamin Appl and Harald Krassnitzer bring together music and a reading of texts and diary entries about the legendary Austro-Hungarian North Pole expedition in the years 1872 to 1874, combining these with Schubert’s Lieder cycle Winter Journey to reflect on the human condition.
