Pianist and composer Iiro Rantala from Finland is one of the most successful jazz musicians of Scandinavia. His virtuoso technique makes him “a natural phenomenon of the keyboard” (Jazzthing), vaccillating between humorous and ironic, pensive and contemplative. The name Rantala has long primarily been linked with the trio Töykeät, one of the wildest and most visionary piano trios of the international jazz world: The Finnish pianist has tested the entire gamut of the classic line-up, sometimes as a powerful animal on the keyboard, sometimes as a sensitive romantic, sometimes as a burlesque jokester. Rantala never lost these qualities, keeping them alive after he dissolved the trio Töykeät in 2006 to focus on his solo career, which took off with Lost Heroes in 2011. On his solo album the Finnish pianist pays tribute to his musical heroes from Jean Sibelius and Esbjörn Svensson to Luciano Pavarotti. Rantala avoids sentimentality whilst clearly expressing his enormous reverence, always staying true to himself: one of the most sterling pianists of Scandinavian jazz music.
For the concert in Villach he brings with him the Swedish jazz guitarist Ulf Wakenius who was commented on as follows by John McLaughlin: “He plays the guitar like he was born with it already in his hands”. From 1997 to 2007 Wakenius was a member of the legendary quartet of Oscar Peterson, who described him as one of the greatest guitarists alive.
