Glenn Gould: String Quartet op. 1
Hugo Wolf: Italian Serenade for string quartet G major
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 15 A minor op. 132
Glenn Gould is known as a legendary pianist. It is, however, not such a well-known fact that the eccentric Canadian was also a composer and actually wanted to focus on composing and conducting after withdrawing from the stage early in his career. Unjustifiably so, because his op. 1, with what Gould called the bitter-sweet idiom of the fin-de-siècle, shows that he would have deserved otherwise. Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade is a cheerful, optimistic and melodious story of southern shores. It was composed in 1887, its buoyancy seems to run counter to the ponderous music fashionable at the time. In the second part of the concert, Acies Quartett will devote itself to Beethoven’s later string quartet op. 132.
