During the Renaissance and early baroque periods, the Italian madrigal was the leading form of secular vocal art. For around 100 years, composers vied for the most interesting and daring ideas. Development started in the mid-16th century, when masters such as Cipriano de Rore paved the way for future generations. This is the diversity of sound which the Profeti della Quinta revive as they take their audience back to 16th and 17th century Italy. The much acclaimed ensemble, which hails from Israel and is now based in Basel, consists of five singers, supported by friends – singers and instrumentalists – as needed. They are united in their quest for making music according to period practice whilst considering today’s audiences and their listening habits.
