The Wiener Jeunesse Orchester (WJO) enters Carinthian Summer Music Festival 2020 with verve. The nationwide youth symphony orchestra, founded in 1987, opens the festival summer in Carinthia for the first time this year. The young artists will introduce themselves to the audience in the most diverse chamber music formations the day before the official opening of the festival. During short concerts at various locations in public spaces, the wind and string groups will present samples from their broad repertoire. They will play in classical structures, as a quartet, octet or trio and surprise the audience with new constellations.
Members of the WJO – students of between 18 and 26 years old, who attend music universities and conservatories in all Austrian federal states – apply for membership via annual auditions. In three work phases, the young musicians develop symphonic orchestra programmes together with renowned conductors.
Herbert Bock has been the artistic director of the orchestra since 1989. Under his direction and through great artistic commitment the WJO has gained an excellent reputation as a pre-professional youth orchestra. The WJO is a regular guest at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Musikverein and in major concert halls throughout Austria, and performs at festivals such as the Vienna Festwochen, Wien Modern, Klangbogen Vienna, the Danube Festival of Lower Austria, and the concert series of the Musical Youth Austria (Jeunesse).
