“What about women in jazz – where are they?“ This is the question asked by the German magazine JazzZeitung in March 2014. Looking at the young Austrian jazz scene, we are proud to report: they are here! This year’s jazz focus reflects the strong presence of female artists of the next generation.
We found the remarkable number of jazz duos hailing from different parts quite striking. There is Duo 4675 – the enigmatic name stands for siblings Astrid and Beate Wiesinger, and their name is derived from the post code of the small place in Upper Austria where they grew up. Beate Wiesinger is also the founder and band leader of e c h o boomer 7.
Ángela Tröndle and Pippo Corvino are an unusual duo whose intense cooperation started as a dialogue on the World Wide Web. Tröndle, the young singer, composer and pianist, is from Salzburg whilst guitarist Corvino comes from Montenegro; their tender and casual songs vacillate between jazz and pop music, combining beautiful and gentle sounds with sensitive and intelligent lyrics.
Judith Ferstl and Lucia Leena formed Juneberry in 2014, a duo whose music brings together a thrilling mix of singer-songwriters’ work and free improvisation. Their music consists of fragments of melodies, lyrics set to music and improvisations which are varied and transformed during the concert.
In Hofmaninger/Schwarz, yet another duo, “wind meets percussion”. The two musicians love to experiment with sounds and an unconventional attribution of roles. Moreover, Lisa Hofmaninger and Judith Schwarz are joined by Judith Ferstl in the unconventional combo chuffDRONE.
Jazz composer, band leader and multi-instrumentalist Matthias Schriefl toured all major concert halls of Europe with his band Shreefpunk as a rising star of the European Concert Hall Organisation from 2008 to 2010; since then, he has taken to primarily experimenting with music from the Alpine region. Today, Shreefpunk is one of the most original groups of the European jazz scene.
To conclude the jazz concerts of this summer, the series will reach a culmination point in an appearance of the quintet Ferstl/Hofmaninger/Schwarz/Tröndle/Wiesinger composed of the five women in jazz of this year’s festival as well as the group e c h o boomer 7. No need for us to worry about women in jazz …
