Solowerke für Violine und Violoncello
Johann Sebastian Bach’s solo works for violin and violoncello are a counter-programme to the noise of the world. Highly concentrated and condensed, complex and demanding, these solo sonatas, suites and partitas have been arranged for a string instrument without bass. At the same time, they offer soloists a maximum of freedom in the possibilities of interpretation. Johann Sebastian Bach himself played the violin until an advanced age; along with the harpsichord, it was his preferred instrument for his own most private expression. According to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel: From his youth to a rather advanced age he played the violin in a pure and penetrating way and thus kept the orchestra in better order than would have been possible with the grand piano. He fully understood the possibilities of all violin instruments. His solos for violin and for violoncello without bass are a testament to this awareness. Carinthian Summer Music Festival 2020 offers audiences the opportunity to listen to works from both exquisite collections. Benjamin Schmid plays three of the sonatas and partitas for violin, including the grandiose D minor Partita with the famous Chaconne, which Bach most likely wrote as an epitaph to his first wife Maria Barbara in 1720. In the Music Salon on 12 July in Schloss Ferlach, Barbara Lüneburg will place these in context with two modern solo violin works, which she sees as Spirituality and Identity.
The genre of the cello suites was not new in itself, but Bach’s treatment of them was fundamentally novel, revolutionary and set the standard for those who followed: Christoph Stradner dares to play the entire solo work for cello in one evening at the Protestant church in the Stadtpark Villach.
